"He smirked, his eyes heating. “Our rooms are very similar.”
That was true. Not only our walls were covered with the layers of our souls, but my room was also messy, so many papers, sticky notes, and art supplies lying all around. I wouldn’t change a single thing about it.
“You’re right.”
“That was why I felt...” He stopped mid-sentence, taking another drag of his cigarette.
My body leaned closer to him on its own. The mood between us shifted once more. “What?”
He locked his jaw and looked away. “It doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to me,” I whispered. Without conscious thought, I moved and covered his hand that rested on the mattress.
He flinched and looked at my hand, frowning. I feared he would pull his hand away, but he didn’t. “Why?”
My pulse beat madly in my throat. “Because... Because you matter to me.” I tightened my grip around his hand, feeling exposed. My eyes went to his scar, and I wished I could touch it, definitely not for the first time. “I want to know everything about you.”
His breathing sped up. “Everything?”
“Everything.”
He sucked in a quick breath, taking in every line of my face with undiluted hunger. He balanced his cigarette on the edge of the ashtray and met my gaze.
“I felt at peace there,” he said hoarsely. “I felt like...”
I leaned even closer to him. “Yes?”
He swallowed. “Like I belonged there.”

The Flowers of Avenel Book 4
Contemporary Romance

Five years ago, April Copeland died so that Laurel Hansen could be born. Escaping from the Callahan brothers hadn’t been easy, but she did it for her unborn daughter, Kara. Now, living in the quiet beach town of Avenel, Laurel feels safe. She’s built a life for herself and Kara. She may even open her heart to a man again, but feeling safe and being safe are two very different things.

Dalton Motley is the kind of guy ladies throw themselves at, which makes Laurel’s disinterest in him more attractive. They’d met once. He’d even been a sort of knight in shining armor to her. So, when she doesn’t recall his name, a seed of disappointment wriggles into his soul, but it’s not there for long. Her delightful laugh thrums gently over his heart and snatches the disappointment before it can take root. Between the joy in her eyes and the feminine timbre of her voice, he’s a goner. It didn’t matter that she didn’t recall his name. He was going to break down the walls she’d built around her heart.

Liam Callahan is an alpha-male who demands respect wherever he goes. He runs two successful businesses: one legal, the other not. During a trip down the coast, Fate smiles upon him. In an accidental meeting, he brushes hands with a young woman. When their gazes connect, her eyes grow big with revulsion. A hint of recognition blooms in Liam’s memory. The tone and cadence of her words spoken in fear make his heart beat a little faster. Was she the one who got away?

Review

I'm a huge fan of Tjebben's writing. I've followed many of her books and I love the way she brings us characters who we can fall in love with. This one doesn't disappoint in that aspect, I was a huge fan of Laurel and her journey. I loved that it was a completely unique story. It's a Romance, yes, but it's so different and I loved that about it.

Confusing at times, but that is because we are uncovering secrets right along with the characters at times. I liked that aspect, it kept me on my toes.

Suspenseful, Romantic, Emotional, Raw, Haunting, Beautiful, and so much more!

Excerpt

My knees cave underneath me, and I sink to the ground, but Noah comes down along with me, holding me all the way through my pain.
“Punch me. Kick me. Hurt me,” he says. “It’s okay.”
“Why?” I say, punching him in the chest again. “Why are you letting me do this?”
“Because you need to, and I will accept that. Be angry … let it out. I can handle it.”
“Fuck!” I yell into his shirt, letting it all out.
He’s never said those words before, and it opens a wound inside me I didn’t know existed. Cuts into it deeply and forces me to rip out my own soul.
And he does it all … for me …
He takes my rage as though he deserves it …
Like a man would quell the pain inside his wife’s heart.
And when I’m done slapping, kicking, and screaming, I fall into his arms and hug him tight. “Thank you.”
He pets my hair, and whispers, “I’m here.”
And right now, that’s all I need.
Him.
It was always him.
But at the same time, all I want is for all of those other patriarchs, including my father, to disappear. Or die.
Not that I’ll ever get my wish.
But I can at least damn well try.

Fiction Feature: El Gringo by Edmond Salus #fiction #review #rabtbooktours @RABTBookTours

Fiction
Date Published: January 2018

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Sonny Galas is an only child being raised by his mother-a widow---and the loving help of his grandfather, also widowed. Living in a Santa Monica apartment complex owned by 'Grandpa' all is well and average for this close-knit family until a certain French family come into the picture, in need of a place to rent. They soon show their colors in various ways, topping it off by slapping a suit on their patient, kind landlord. Sonny's family sees no better option than selling their only asset-the apartments-and getting far away from their Lawyer-packing tenants. Far, as in 'leaving the country', and this is where their true adventure begins. South of the border becomes their new home.

From their journey through third-world narrow roads, small towns where no English is spoken, to long, hot unending desert roads and through humid coastal towns they continue toward their big city destination, Guadalajara, where their life begins and they encounter everything and everyone from kind helpers to con-artists and crazies and from strangers to good friends, both Mexican and American. From young boy to teenager, as the years pass, Sonny sees it all: his family's ups and downs, the country's ups and downs with its own political third-world corruption, and his own transformation from a simple boy in a new country to a growing youth, fully fluent in Spanish; a devilish yet fun-loving teenager now with roots firmly planted and sprouting happily in his new home, his new country. From the adventures and joys of boyhood with his friends and pals to the wild days through grade school, junior high and high school with the opportunities given him as a bi-lingual kid to living through the set-backs that could trouble any family-Mexican or American-even scare of the faint of heart, he takes it all in; after all, now he's Mexican. The fiestas, the friends, the awesome busy modern streets of Guadalajara in the early Seventies to the early Eighties, Guadalajara, the country's capital of Mariachis.

Review

A story that flowed and the characters brought to life by the way the author depicted them.
Sonny is such a great lead character to lead this story.
This was a good story well written and thoroughly enjoyable.
This is one of those bedtime books that keep you up late, thinking, ‘Just one more page . . .’

She’s Risqueen.

Celeste was never meant to be a vampire. She never wanted to die, or be undead, or drink blood. And the vampire who turned her, Angela Estrada, certainly didn’t want her either. Celeste has never been a fan of Angela’s cynical overly religious ways and she’s spent two whole centuries asking the same question: Why her?

He’s Fraccas.

Tanner is in a bind. Even as Second in Command to the Fraccas clan, he’s never been completely on board with the leader’s view of the world and their place in it. Now there’s a strong likelihood that Ignatius is looking for a way to replace Tanner. Permanently.

Sworn Enemies. Until . . .

Eyes meet across a crowded ballroom. The world stops. And then starts spinning again…in the opposite direction. Moving them toward each other when everything about who—and whose— they are is designed to keep them apart.

When your world won’t let you have the one thing you desire most, what other choice is there than to burn it down and build a new one?

Excerpt

Celeste didn’t know what she’d been expecting. Clearly, she hadn’t been thinking. Just reacting. Moving on instinct. She’d never had an instinct so strong as the one that had pulled her across the room to that man.
She hadn’t bothered to ask herself what she would do once she stood in front of him.
Seeing the leggy brunette in a skin tight red dress had been a serious wake up call.
Celeste slipped out the back door and into the cool night air with a sigh. Autumn was nearing its second half, where the trees were barren and the cold mornings were slow to relinquish their hold, returning with a vengeance as soon as the sun turned its back again.
Celeste didn’t feel the chill. No gooseflesh rose on her arms, she didn’t shiver or pace about to keep warm. Instead, she took a deep breath of fallen leaves and impending dew and leaned her back against the wall of the building.
It was quiet outside. Quiet and deserted. Above, music and conversation escaped the hall through the open balcony doors. Couples who thought no one could hear them rendezvoused on those balconies. Their whispers floated down almost incoherent to where Celeste stood. She closed her eyes and listened without really paying attention.
When she opened her eyes again, she already knew she wasn’t alone. The breeze moved past another before reaching her.
He stood only a few feet from her. Silent and imposing as a gravestone. His eyes rested on her with a curious sort of ease, as if he was able to relax for the first time in ages.
Celeste didn’t move from where she leaned against the building. She stared back at him and waited. He hadn’t thought it through either. The “what came next” part. The side of her mouth lifted. What a pair they were.
He took in her smile, eyes lingering on her mouth, flicking back to her eyes, then spanning the curve of her cheeks and jaw.
Celeste had never felt so seen in all of her life . . . or death, for that matter. He took in every aspect of her and kept on looking. She swallowed back the jumble of words that rose in her throat. Nothing she attempted to say would make any sense. Jibberish, all of it. And the first person who spoke might break the moment. Dispel the magic.
And it was magic.
Celeste stared back at him just as intently. Admired the breadth of his shoulders and the straight line of his nose. The unforgiving slant of his jaw and the steady warmth of his light eyes. What color were they? Impossible to tell in the starlight.
He opened his mouth, but only a small sigh of air escaped before Celeste moved forward, cutting him off with a shake of her head. She stopped barely a foot from him. The space between them wavered, pulled like a magnet to its mate.
Celeste took a deep breath. Cotton and pine and bourbon whiskey. Clean and warm and welcoming. She closed her eyes with a smile, opening them again when his hand touched her hair, smoothing over her curls so lightly, it was as if a butterfly had landed against them.
They were closer somehow.
Time and space vanished until only their senses ruled them.
His hand curved around the back of her neck, tangling in her hair. Celeste’s fingers found their way into his coat, curling around the lapels.
Nothing in her life had made sense for so long. Nothing had fit. Nothing felt right. There was always a “but.”
Until him. Until this. Until . . .

Review

One of the most important things for me in a book like this is how effectively the author manages to differentiate between the times and how authentic they feel. I think D. Lieber has really managed to create a story that does both of these things exceedingly well. I loved the time-travel aspect and how much that brought to the story.

The characters were a very close second to my favorites things about this book. I loved them so much and I loved them both individually and together. I enjoyed their journey and how real their feelings felt to me as the reader.

It's a beautiful story that the author really manages to keep alive with vivid storytelling.
