Jahnes, an experienced mercenary at the peak of his profession, encounters an unstoppable foe, and his defeat leads him to question his life’s path. Holing up at a country inn to recover from his injuries, he becomes intrigued by the landlady, a woman of strength and compassion. As the months go by their relationship develops, and he begins to dream of a new life as an innkeeper.
But his unique talents and experience are needed to save the kingdom from attack by fierce savages from the high southern plains. Just when he is getting used to his new life, his old life reaches for him and offers him challenge and success such as he never dreamed of.
Of course, in order to satisfy the needs of his kingdom and his new family, he first has to stay alive.
The Innkeeper’s Husband is a standalone novel, part of the Petrellan Saga.

Review

This novel had a lot of history and a lot of detail, that is a great thing, but I wish that the pacing would have been a bit faster. Some times it did seem to read a little slow and drag. The overall plot was great and the characters were very well developed.

Gordon A. Long has done a great job of creating a fantasy novel that combines characters who feel real while keeping the balance between their lives in general and the duty Jahnes feels like he has because of his skills.

There is plenty of action during the heart of the novel.
