YA Dystopian Feature: The Cyclopes' Eye by Jeffrey Haskey-Valerius #blogtour #bookreview #giveaway #youngadult #yadystopian #yascifi #rabtbooktours @RABTBookTours @jeffreyhvwrites

YA Dystopian, Soft Sci-Fi

Date to be Published: 04-09-2024

Publisher: NineStar Press

First they came for his sister’s eye. Now they’re coming for his. And what’s even worse is he deserves it.

Henry has never had anything good happen to him, period. Full stop. That’s why, after school, he’s going to put on his big-boy pants and confess his love to his best friend—because the universe owes him one, dammit, and he needs a win.

But maybe doing it on Drill Day wasn't the best idea—the one day a month that healthcare conglomerate Axiom infiltrates schools across America to select a new candidate to give up one of their eyes, for... research? And if this Drill Day is anything like the last, Henry will never get a chance at a good life. Especially if his past keeps threatening to eat him alive, and especially if his old ways of keeping the darkness at bay refuse to work anymore.

Review

Good action and personal interaction. It started a little slow with backstory and world-building, but rapidly became more and more intense as the story developed.

I really enjoyed the descriptive writing, fascinating character insights into their motivations, and enough backstory to keep me in the the plot line to leave us wanting more.

About the Author

Jeffrey Haskey-Valerius works in healthcare by day and writes weird fiction and poetry by night. His shorter work has been featured in numerous literary journals and has been nominated for prizes, including Best of the Net. He currently lives in the Midwest with his unbelievably handsome and perfect dog, and also a human whom he loves. The Cyclopes’ Eye is his debut novel.

Review
Wow, blown away. This was a fast-paced story with thrilling moments sprinkled throughout.

It was a perfect balance of serious and sweet--and to top it off, it delivers everything it hints at.

I found this overall to be very intriguing and filled with mystery from beginning to end.
The relationships are so very well fleshed out and they along with the action will keep you hooked and on the edge of your seat. Beautiful writing.

Young Adult Sci-Fi

Date Published: February 25, 2021

The coming battle has been foretold by the myths of the Indigenous Americans of the Arizona desert for generations.

Review
This book grabbed you from the very beginning!
The writer has an effusive style, like the words are just bursting out of him on to the page.
A beautiful world is found along with adventure, intrigue, and love in all its forms within this story.

Phil Asmundson has taken an unusual path to publish his first book—the first of a trilogy no less. He was an outdoor kid who built not only miles of trails through the woods but also created adventures that lived only in his mind. Discovering who you are can be dangerous - even deadly.

Twyla's been living in hiding on Earth, hoping to leave her past behind. But when her mother, Madam Cassiopeia DeConnett finds her and kidnaps her back to the Paraxous Star Cluster, she expects her daughter to take her rightful place within the family business. The DeConnetts are Dashia- a group of genetically- engineered telepaths who use their powers to control some and ruin others. Their criminal organization is rich, powerful, and spans The Cluster.

When escape seems impossible, Twyla considers suicide. Then she meets Dovain, another prisoner, and their friendship blossoms into something more. Together, can they figure out how to free themselves? Can she trust herself enough to risk loving him? If she does, will that love save her, or lead to her destruction?

Review
Unique story that is well written. The reader is quickly drawn to the characters and the author does an amazing job at creating emotional bonds with each.
Twyla is strong and smart, and while she is a flawed human despite her abilities, she is real.
This story gets very intense at times which I really like. It's not cookie cutter it is RAW and REAL.

A group of young adults searching for a friend that goes missing. Amid the searching, they find themselves thrust into a war they never knew existed, which spawns more conflicts than those with which they started out.

"He wanted more power, and more control. When I was with him, that seemed to be his main goal."

"What other power was there?"

"Oh, more than you could ever know."

Review
The writer has an effusive style, like the words are just bursting out of him on to the page.
The characters are both dynamic and well thought out with each developing in a natural pace within a flowing plot line.
A traditional fantasy comprising all the best elements.
Great story!
